Description
Anytime there’s a change to a vehicle or vessel’s registered owner or lienholder, that change needs to be updated in DMV’s records within 10 days and the California Certificate of Title needs to be transferred to the new owner.
A change in ownership is usually due to:
- Sale, gift, or donation
- Adding or deleting the name of an owner
- Inheritance
- Satisfaction of lien (full payment of car loan)
Coverage Details
Have the California Certificate of Title on hand. If you do not have the title, complete an Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227). You will need to mail the Certificate of Title to DMV. We will give you the address later in the transaction.
Make sure the title has been signed by the buyer(s), seller(s), and lienholder (if applicable). If your title has not been signed by all required parties, you may not request a title transfer through DMV Virtual Office.
Have the following:
- Your driver’s license number
- Vehicle license plate number
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Legal owner (or lienholder) name and address
- Vehicle make, model, and year
- Purchase date and price
